Who is your Boox device talking to?
Since I wanted to know what the Boox was doing in the background I decided to setup a closed network and monitor all traffic using Wireshark
Excellent video from @MyDeepGuide where he look straight on the device and the apps running on it. ua-cam.com/video/fQctTrqIQQE/v-deo.html

    It's funny, you start worrying about the Chinese government spying on us, but all you find are private companies and oligopolies from the US. It seems like the best version of Boox was the one without the Google Play Store, which spies on everything you do.

      It's been a while since I recorded this, so big thank you for giving the timestamp. Github was mostly because it's easier to understand for many, but any central hosting solution for git should work and of course keep in mind that git isn't encrypted. Diving into hosting your own secure git storage would however totally be out of scope for the video

    Is there another way to do tables? Because using # or [[ ]] it would mess with the purpose of my #s and [[ ]] already created. I use #s as tags so I can find the subjects I need. If I use that to create tables it would mess my list of tags (and plugin I use for it). Thank you so much for the content! Have a great week!

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech 13 днів тому

      Well, it is if you want to generate tables because you need some way to mark those lines, ideally those tags would already match your workflow but if it's not the case then you can build tables by hand using markdown table markup. If you do want to filter and you already have a system I would try and build the table using the existing tags you have and modify the query for example to combine some tags to get to the same result. The final way would be to make it a subblock of something that is tagged elsewhere, but once you get to that it might just be easier to make a tag and see if the plugin u use has a ignore setting so you can hide it.

      @@toolsontech I was looking for something like a sheet (ex.: Google Sheet). Where you can have a table and you just put entries there without having to create a page for every entry. @@RodrigoKormann Sadly no, would love that function since I often have data in tables that I quickly want to edit. I hope it will come with the DB version. My current workaround is to shift click the pages and load a stack in the sidebar and edit the notes there but it's very clunky. And welcome to the rabbithole that is Logseq (and pkm, not sure if starting with that as well)

    I used Logseq for awhile and I just got tired of how messy it gets and how bad the stability is once you hit x number of notes and nodes, which the app auto creates those files whenever you use a tag or reference a page that doesn't exist. If you remove the tag or the page reference the page still exists in your database and becomes a zombie file in your graph. Also, if you move to something else, good luck, because Logseq doesn't use standard MDL. Also, you're kind of screwing yourself over with embeds, especially if you move to another PKM. Ultimately, I just moved over to Obsidian and I like that it works for me and I don't work for it. Logseq you're forced to organize around how the app is built. Obsidian, you can turn a folder into a database, you can use that to create other things like projects, CRMs, and if you want to work like you're in Logseq that's good too. It can be whatever you need it to be.

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech 19 днів тому

      Glad Obsidian is working for you, nothing wrong with that. I'm well aware and warned people that once you start usings embeds you are kind of stuck with Logseq because it's incompatible with other tools but I don't think it's worse then the internal linking of Obsidian or any of cloud solutions out there that will give you hard to parse backups as well. I'm mostly happy we get the choice

    Great video, thanks! Does anybody know why queries reorder tasks within blocks instead of just showing everything as it appears in the original location?

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech 19 днів тому

      A query has no set order and as such if you get things in the right order it's more luck. I do however uses queries for my tasks and then unfold them to get subtasks and those will remain in order. So for me query is -> Based on priority, due date, etc.. If order is important -> Subtasks onder a main task that has a priority

    • @Noodles.FreeUkraine
      @Noodles.FreeUkraine 18 днів тому

      @@toolsontech Ouch. 😒 I would have hoped, if it wouldn't apply active sorting, it would at least accept the order in which everything was entered instead of throwing it around. I guess since I use the TODO Master plugin to show the progress, my tasks look like subtasks, but in reality they aren't. Maybe I'll have to ditch that one as well and work with real subtasks. So annoying having tons of great plugins that don't add much to the experience after all when you try them out. 😕 I still appreciate your response very much, thanks for getting back to me! 👋

    I watched this video from start to finish, and have no idea what this guy is talking about. Why are videos about note taking so frustrating all the time? Is there videos about notetaking apps for normal human beings? They are really hard to find, to tell you the truth.

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech 19 днів тому

      That's too bad, I try and make things simple but this one in particular is really getting into using the more advanced features of Logseq. No matter how I cut it, a video is always aimed at a general audience so if you still didn't find anything hit me up on DM and we can always have a call. No costs, I really like talking note taking and love seeing how other people struggle or tackle the issue so I can help out.

    • @DmitryRomanov
      @DmitryRomanov 18 днів тому

      1. The way you use the note-taking for depends on your goal. - In the beginning no one has a clear goal, so just grab something and start to write and copy/paste any stuff you think you need to remember. - I recommend something Markdown based (it forces you into a simpler style) and local folder based. - DO NOT create preliminary folders/tags/... structures! It will never work and never did, you will just waste time. 2. Once you have many notes, you will have a troubles finding the stuff you need. Start linking things together and regroup them together. - DO NOT classify, unless you are a librarian - let it grow organically, and the structure will emerge. Grow organically means, for example, looking somewhere, finding it in another place, and moving the stuff you found into the place you started to look for it in the first place (or dropping a link there). - make a decision, what do you use your system for: to support knowledge collection/thinking, or to support your workflow - knowledge stuff and writing: - read Sonke Ahrens book, Cal Newport book (Deep work) - workflow - read Getting Things Done by David Allen 3. At that point you will have a set of troubles we all have, and this video will make sense))) P.S. Difference between knowledge garden and workflow is that the result of the first one is a deep structured book describing something you really want to know. In the second case, you will have a set of clearly defined actions that will be easily applicable in any context where they are needed. P.P.S. There are hybrid systems like PARA by Tiago Forte, but the basis is to start from 1. and work your way without making stuff complicated unless you need to. Just start writing and go forward. Good luck to you!

    Thx for all your great Videos. Nice to see that you have the same setup as me. Bitwarden autocomplete is flaky sometimes. In those cases i open it directly and copy the password go back to where i need it and past it, that always works. They keyboard is nice a really like it too. The only think missing for me is the option to use key-combinations to insert umlauts, as i do on my laptop. For on screen keyboard i can recommend the "Unexpected Keyboard" as this has nice features to insert special keys. With the default keyboard of the boox logseq is unuseable, because of missing keys. Also i use Synology Drive for my pdf's which i annotate and sign on the Boox. But it's better to download them to the Boox and fill it with the NeoReader, rather than open it directly in the Drive folder. As doing so ended up not having the annotations outside of the NeoReader. So better test it on your laptop or with a different PDF reader before sending the document out ;).

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech Місяць тому

      Yeah, normally I do that as well, but on the boox the login form would reset as I switched between bitwarden and reader. Now I could copy the password beforehand and type my email but if 2FA was enabled then no joy either. Keyboard is tricky for sure, I currently run gboard so I can still use Logseq and will make a video about that, will have a look at unexpected keyboard. The default keyboard I consider unusable since it lacks swipe typing. This is basic stuff if you want to do any form of fast data entry I feel. (Except maybe speech to text, but can't use that everywhere) Annotated PDFs is always a bit of a pain with double checks, had it to many times I found empty pdf where I thought the updated saved version should be. Expect a few videos about the boox, I'm passed the "add as much as possible" and almost done with the "cut till the essentials" phase. :)

    I'd really like to see a proper indexing where one can quickly switch between tasks for different customers and make comments in detail about what one did during each time segment. Also it would be best if one could drop a time stamp AFTER the work was done because one doesn't always know what one is about to do but they ALWAYS know what they just did (so the whole concept of "clocking in" to a task is basically flawed. One should only "clock-out" of what one just did (and at the start of the day one could clock out of the universal task "personal time," along with maybe some notes about what one did during that time to keep a diaryor some such).

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech Місяць тому

      I always forget to clock-out, but ideally my workflow should be to always journal when I stop something since that would give me the time done, a good estimate on how much work was done and what was done. But if we are going into so much detail one might consider a dedicated tracking app like toggl

    Thank you, I was thinking about trying the same device but now I am quite disappointed. I thought I could read an ebook and make notes in logseq using split screen. This doesn't seem possible. Furthermore, using logseq in general doesn't seem go well. This would frustrate me. How well can you work using handwriting recognition to enter notes in logseq? This would be very interesting for me.

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech Місяць тому

      Reading ebook and making notes at the same time in logseq works fine. Just did a double check. In practice however I usually just read, highlight and use readwise to sync the notes back to Logseq but that's a workflow choice. Handwriting recognition is good, and even understands my horrible writing most of the time. But in practice using gboard with swype is just so much faster that I use that to take notes. I spend a lot of time using gboard and logseq to make personal notes and really enjoy that workflow. But in large part mostly because I still hold a pen so it feels like writing just faster and directly into logseq :)

But now the password manager is closed and if you open it, it will close the browser again. So you just can't win. Eventually I gave up and just opened bitwarden on my phone and typed it over but the fact that I had to do that felt like a real fail.

      I think that's in large part due to the Android OS, when reading it lasts quite long but as soon as I start running apps, syncing, etc.. it really drains. Luckily as long as it lasts a couple of days I don't mind since I will just charge it next to my phone when sleeping.

      Until now I haven't seen any major concerns, the main one I had was the ksync background app, but now I know that actually uploads my notes to my webdav store as PDFs. Something I'm very happy about because I will always have access to my notes even if the Boox device breaks or is no longer in use.

      @@toolsontech You mean to say the notes on the Boox default app are note in an open-source format ? PDF is good but lacks "life" (ie editability). I'm currently migrating to kDrive, growing tired of Nextcloud despite numerous tries over the years

    I'm glad you made this video. I've been tempting to get one of these. I love my Remarkable, but the idea of having an e-ink device that can work with readwise is pretty tempting. I think I'll keep using my Remarkable covering my books to epub works for me and for articles the browser extension works well. The only limitation there's no good way to get my highlights into Obsidian.

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech Місяць тому

      Yeah, if you already have an e-ink note taking device it's a bit of a hard sell. My current setup uses Moon+ Reader Pro and that sends all my highlights straight to Readwise. Readwise then will sync it to Logseq and it will show up in my Journal for processing. I'm making an assumption but assume that Readwise also has an Obsidian plugin. Will definitely be showing that workflow in a future video.

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech Місяць тому

      Hah, old habit from installing operating systems for companies where that is the default and later android where Google only released some features to the US English market. Then in practice I always need to go into localization to fix time to 24h, start the day on Monday, assign euro symbol.

    I love the Moonlander, but if there is a v2, I hope they just give us more keys. Function keys and navigation keys. Layers are great, but the more you have to use them the more unnecessary key presses there are. Comfort is great, but practicality is important too.

    Thanks for the video. I'm surprised it is acceptable for to copy/paste the data between Logseq and the ChatGPT client. There are a few logseq plugins that connect directly to the ChatGPT API (or any other compatible API with alternative models) so you can have the LLMs interact directly with your notes as you like, and have the results tagged and orchestrated so that is always clear what notes are your own and what is generated by a LLM.

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech Місяць тому

      While I tried a few of the plugins, the tradeoff is usually a steep drop in quality on the interactive part. So either it's prebuild queries that get me a specific result and stop me from refining the get the exact result I need. Or chat is build into Logseq but a very poor implementation compared to the ChatGPT chat interface. I'll keep an eye on the plugins obviously as I expect them to get better.

    Why some of the blocks are colored in orange, and what's the reason behind it? Do you not use headers or is it for another reason? I'm still figuring out what note style is the most useful.

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech Місяць тому

      I use a small css snipped to color bold text orange, that way it pops out and is easier to spot when reviewing my notes.

      @toolsontech Місяць тому

      That's always a bit of a pain, I know some key manufactures have alice kits (Cerakeys comes to mind) and what I also often do is ask for extra shift keys with no markings as they are the same size. At least for one side of my Alice. On the nocfree they are the same making it a bit easier.

    Honestly, this is not what I expected. I thought data will stay in Markdown, but all overhead indexing would go into databases. Not sure about this step.

    • @toolsontech
      @toolsontech Місяць тому

      If they get 2 way syncing working it might still be like that. As you could use markdown as a single source of truth. Just really hope that the sync will be better with error handling then what happens now.
